Plot Size Conversion: How To Convert Marla Into Square Feet, Square Yard & Square Metre

Different units are used while measuring lands depending upon the region. Like, in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh the standard units used for land measuring are Marla, Yard (also Gaz), Square feet, Kanal, and Acre. The basic unit for measuring a Marla used to be the Karm, or a footstep of average length, i.e. 5.5 Feet, this system was devised for Marla’s standardization under British Rule.  This standardization measured 1 Marla= 272.25 Square Feet, but various Housing schemes currently consider three Marla measurements in Pakistan. Before explaining these different Marla measurements, it is essential to know what a Marla is and how to measure standard, Marla.

Who started the system of measuring land?

During the Mughal Empire, various agrarian reforms were taken in the subcontinent. It was Akbar the Great, who imposed practical standardization of weights and measurements in his empire. The units used at that time were Gaz and Bigha, a gaz is equal to 3 feet while the Bigha is 2420 square gaz. During Akbar’s time, standardized bamboo rods were used for measuring lands.

How to Measure a Marla?

During British rule, the standard Marla was equal to 9 square Karma. A karm is an average footstep of 5.5 feet in length. Here is how to measure a standard Marla without any measuring tape.

  • Keep in mind the formula of Area= Length x Width
  • Walk three steps lengthwise of the land (1 footstep= 5.5 Feet and 3 Steps=16.5 feet)
  • Again, walk three steps along the width of the plot (1 footstep= 5.5 Feet and 3 Steps=16.5 feet)
  • Now, you have walked a total of 6 footsteps or 6 Karms.
  • Put the values in the formula.

1 Marla Area= Length x Width

1 Marla Area= 3 footstep x 3 footstep (1 footstep= 5.5 feet)

1 Marla Area= 3 (5.5) x 3(5.5) or 16.5 x 16.5

1 Marla Area= 272.25 Square Feet

Above is the calculation of Marla. However, you can also measure a Marla using a measuring tape or measuring rod. Compute 16.5 feet in length and 16.5 feet as a width of the land and then multiply both.

What is Marla?

A Marla is the 160th part of an acre, whose area is square feet is 272.25 as per British standardization. One Marla is also equal to 30.25 square yards or approximately 25.2929 square meters. Remember, 1 Yard= 3 feet and is mostly used in land measurements in the Indo-Pak subcontinent. About 20 Marlas constitute a Kanal which is equal to 5445 sq. ft of area.

Three different sizes of one Marla are 272.25 sq. ft, 250 sq. ft, and 225 sq. ft. Sometimes another unit Gaz is also used, which is equal to 3 feet. Here we have provided calculations of 3 different Marla measurements in sq. yard, sq. feet, and sq. meter; so, buyers can be aided with an easy guide while purchasing a Pakistan plot.

5 Marla Plot Dimensions

  1. When 1 Marla measures 272.25 sq. ft, the dimensions for 5 Marla would be 27 x 50 (27 Width or front and 50 Length)
  2. If 1 Marla measurement is = 250 sq. ft, the plot dimension of 5 Marla will be 25ft x 50ft (25 ft Width and 50 ft Length)
  3. Considering 1 Marla = 225 sq. ft, and your 5 Marla plot has dimensions 25ft x 45ft (25ft Width while 45ft Length)

Plots in icon Valley, DHA and Bahria Town have their 1 Marla= 225 sq. ft.

Dimensions of 10 Marla Plot

  1. Standard 1 Marla = 272.25 sq. ft, then the Plot Dimension of 10 Marla would be 36ft x 75ft (36ft Width and 75ft length)
  2. When your 1 Marla = 250 sq. ft, then 10 Marla plot dimensions will measure 35ft x 70ft (35ft Width while 70ft Length)
  3. If 1 Marla measures 225 sq. ft, your 10 Marla plot dimensions will be 35ft x 65ft (35ft Width and 65ft length)

If you buy a 10 Marla plot in Icon Valley Lahore, DHA Lahore, or Bahria Town Lahore, the dimensions will be 35ft front and 65ft length, because their 1 Marla measurement is 225 sq. ft.

Common Land Measuring Units in Pakistan

The standard measuring system for farmland or agricultural land has different units. Most people find confusions, to help them we have briefed all the land measurement units.

  • 9 Karm = 1 Marla = 9 x (5.5×5.5) = 272.25 Sq. ft = 30.25 Sq. yard (Gaz)
  • 20 Marlas = 1 Kanal = (5,445 sq. ft) = 605 sq. Yard (Gaz)
  • 4 Kanals = 1 Bigha = (21,780 sq. ft) = 2420 sq. Yard (Gaz)
  • 2 Bighas/ 8 Kanals = 1 Acre = (43,560 sq. ft) = 4840 sq. Yard (Gaz)
  • 9 Kanals = 1 Killa = (48,400 sq. ft) = 5377.78 sq. Yard (Gaz)
  • 2.5 Acres = 1 Hectare = (107639 sq. ft) = 11959.89 sq. Yard (Gaz)
  • 25 Acres = 1 Murabba = 10.11 Hectares

Conclusion

There is a difference of units used for measuring residential lands and farmlands; the major one is the varying Marla area. We have provided ample information about the different land measurements, dimensions, and units used for commercial and agricultural lands.
